The Week Ahead: Football Practice Begins, Black Diamonds Fundraiser

What's on tap around town this week.

Happy Monday West Islip! Here's what is going on around town this week.

The West Islip High School football team begins practice for its 2013 season on Monday. Practice for the other fall sports teams begins next week.

A fundraiser for the LI U10 Black Diamonds Team, a West Islip travel baseball team, will be held on Saturday at Lily Flanagan's in Babylon. The cost is $50 (half of the money goes towards the team) per person from 7-10 p.m.  This will include a fun time with food and drinks with a raffle and a small Chinese auction. Anyone wishing to donate to the Black Diamonds who can’t make the fundraiser: please send to West Islip Black Diamonds - PO BOX 262 West Islip, NY 11795. The money raised during this event is going toward the next Black Diamonds tournament.

The film "For the Love of Learning" will be shown at the West Islip Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday. From the library's newsletter: This film, written by local filmmaker and educator Doug Keating, is about life, learning and freedom. Students learn best, remember more and remain curious longer when the learning is rigorous and relevant to their lives. It has been shown at SUNY Cortland, Cornell University, and at school conferences in California. Doug’s belief, that good schools nourish and encourage good teaching is something that parents and educators alike should be concerned about.
