Turri, Galasso Face-Off In Carolina

Former West Islip lacrosse stars show their talents in Duke/North Carolina game Friday night.

Justin Turri and Nicky Galasso, two legendary names in the history of West Islip High School lacrosse, were on opposite sides of the field Friday night as the Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels faced off in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.

In the end, it was Turri’s Blue Devils running out to a 9-3 halftime lead and holding on for a 13-11 victory over Galasso and his Tar Heels teammates. Both teams are 5-3 on the season.

The two were teammates on West Islip's 2007 New York State Class A championship team that finished the season 22-1.

Turri assisted on the game’s first goal and finished the contest played at Koskinen Stadium on the Duke Campus with four shots.

Galasso assisted on North Carolina’s first goal, which at the time cut Duke’s lead to 4-1. In the fourth quarter, the sophomore would find the back of the cage in a man-up situation to make the score 11-8 in favor of Duke. He finished the game with two points and four shots.

On the season Turri has six goals — two game winners — and seven total points. Galasso, who is coming off an , has had a slow start to his season with two goals and an assist. Earlier this year both players were named to the watch list, the award given to the best player in Division I lacrosse.

Duke next plays Sunday against Dartmouth, and North Carolina will play Dartmouth this coming Wednesday.
