The finalists for Inside Lacrosse’s 5th Annual Laxies awards have been announced and once again West Islip’s boys high school lacrosse team has been nominated.

With on-line voting now open, the 2012 New York State Class A champions are one of five finalists in the category of “High School Team of the Year.” The Lions are joined by Garden City, which finished the 2012 season as New York State Class B champions and a 22-0 record; Calvert Hall, Md.; Gonzaga, D.C.; and Bridgewater-Raritan, N.J.

West Islip was once again the talk of the high school lacrosse world on Long Island and across the country as the team finished this past season 22-1, with its only loss coming to Catholic league power Chaminade 7-6.

In the post season, the Lions rolled through the Class A playoffs, considered by many to be one of the most competitive high school lacrosse divisions in the nation. Its only bump along the road to a fifth state title over the past seven years was the Long Island Championship game, when West Islip trailed Syosset 4-2 at halftime. But the Lions outscored Syosset 9-0 in the second half for an 11-4 win.
