Alumni Report: Former Lions Ready for NCAA LAX Tourney

Weekly column highlights athletic accomplishments of West Islip graduates.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse tournament kicks off this weekend and West Islip players will take part in several games.

On Saturday, the first of the eight games to be played over the weekend will feature No. 3 Duke vs. Syracuse. The Blue Devils roster includes Justin Turri, a redshirt senior, and freshman goaltender Kyle Turri.

During the regular season Justin Turri played 16 games, starting 15, and had 13 goals and 7 assists. Kyle Turri played in seven games, starting three, and was 2-1 with a 9.75 goals against average.

Also on Saturday, No. 8 North Carolina faces Denver. The Tar Heels roster includes former West Islip standout Nicky Galasso, who spent the 2012 season battling a foot injury. He played in 12 games, starting two, and had six goals and two assists.

The Saturday schedule also includes Colgate taking on No. 6 Massachusetts. Freshman Connor Braddish played in 14 games (no starts) this season for the Raiders and had three goals and one assist.

Sunday’s schedule includes Yale facing No. 4 Notre Dame. Michael McCormack has been a fixture on the Bulldogs’ defense, starting in all 15 regular season games with three goals and four assists with 54 ground balls.

Also on Sunday, Stony Brook faces No. 2 Johns Hopkins. Michael Diggle is on the Seawolves’ roster but has not played this season as he was red-shirted due to a medical reason.

Notable

In women’s lacrosse, Adelphi’s Devan Crimi was named to the Northeast-10 Conference’s All-Conference first team. The sophomore attack finished the regular season with 48 goals and 20 assists. On Saturday, Adelphi faces C.W. Post in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
