Public Comments from Study Group Hearing Now Available

School District website has transcripts online.

The West Islip School District has released the public comment transcripts from the Study Group Community Hearing that took place two weeks ago inside the high school auditorium.

The transcripts include the names of all the parents and residents who voiced their opinions regarding the Study Group's findings.  Many of the public comments were directed toward school closures, especially Oquenock, and how devastating it would be for the students.

"Elementary-aged children thrive on small-class instruction," Andrea Gebler said. "Changing that and grade configuration of elementary buildings would have a negative impact on students. They need a sense of stability.  Moved to West Islip for its reputation, and smaller school sizes even in light of paying higher taxes."

However, Superintendent Rick Simon said the district has not made any decisions regarding school closures.  The BOE will make that decision in early 2012, Simon said.

"Children attend Oquenock. We must retain smaller class sizes – struggling students especially need that environment," Martina Scheben said.  "Changing the configuration and closing an elementary school will only inflict stress on all.”
