Students Learning About Ocean Pollution

Manetuck second grade students of Cynthia LaPrarie and Daria Solano work on multi-pronged project designed to raise awareness of threats facing sea life.

As has been tradition at for years, second grade teacher Cynthia LaPrarie is again embarking on a major project that this year features the construction of a whale. 

Teaming with fellow second grade teacher Daria Solano, students and parents in both classes are working together to construct the water-based mammal, which will be seen later this year during Manetuck's annual education fair.

In addition, students this year are creating bracelets made from old two-liter soda bottles that will be sold at the school in an effort raise money and adopt a whale.

The focus of the project this year is to not only educate students about whales and the dangers they face in the wild, but also teach youngsters about the impact pollution has on the oceans, LaPrarie said.
