Maginniss Ready to Tackle District Issues as BOE Member

West Islip's most recent elected BOE member spoke with Patch about his victory last Tuesday.

West Islip Board of Education’s newest elected member, recently beat out candidate Kevin O’Connor for Sharon Bieselin’s seat in last Tuesay’s election and will begin duties this July.  

In what was a tight race, (the actual total 1,620 to 1,301).

“It feels great to know the people have confidence in me,” Maginniss said.  “We have a lot of challenges coming up, not only in our district but in districts across the island.”

Maginniss said joining the BOE was something he’s thought about in the past, but when he heard Bieselin wasn’t running for re-election, he jumped at the opportunity. 

“It’s something I’ve considered over time,” he said.  “I’m part of the study group and we’re looking at the district and looking at the finances.  Being part of that group and seeing the challenges coming up, it made me say ‘I need to do something.’

"When I found out that Sharon was stepping down, I said ‘this is a good time to volunteer my services.’”

A 39-year resident, , budgeting, planning and analysis to the board.  He said he’s unsure which committees he’ll be involved in, but will figure out where he can provide his expertise the most with the remaining members

“We’ll just look at my strengths… Finance is my background but if I’m not in that committee, I’m sure I’ll still have a lot of things to say about it.”

Maginniss said there wasn’t too much celebrating last Tuesday night and was more pleased to hear that residents approved the 2011-12 school budget. 

“It was more a humbling experience,” he said.  “I let it sink in for a moment.”
