Bellew Students Collect Sneakers for Recycling

Donated shoes will be turned into running tracks, synthetic basketball courts and more.

The Bellew Recylcing Club at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School recently partcipated in a sneaker drive as part of the Keep Islip Clean Sneaker Recycling Program.

In total, the group collected 192 sneakers, which will be shipped to the Nike recycling center in Memphis, Tenn. At the center, they'll be separated into three materials-upper fabric, midsole foam and outsole rubber. Each part will be recycled into useful materials.

The rubber will be recycled into material for baseball and soccer fields, as well as golf products, weight room flooring, and running tracks.  The foam will be used in synthetic basketball courts, tennis courts, and playground surfacing.  The fabric will become padding under hardwood basketball floors.
