Town: Residents Must Re-Register for Basic STAR Tax Rebate
State, town going digital in rebate program registration.
Town of Islip officials are advising West Islip residents to keep an eye out for STAR tax exemption paperwork coming from the state finance office in the next two week.
Homeowners are being asked to re-apply for the program following a state audit that uncovered potential fraud by property owners.
During a local civic meeting Town of Islip Assessor Ronald Devine explained that fraudulent incidents have prompted town and state officials to move to a digital data system with the STAR rebate program so that homeowners could not reap benefits on more than one residence.

The paperwork, said Devine, will clearly explain how homeowners can re-register using either an online site or through a telephone system.
About 60,000 Islip residents are eligible for the STAR program, noted Devine.

Homeowners who fall under the enhanced STAR program, which is for those over 65 years old, do not have to re-register.
Anyone who doesn't receive the paperwork within the next two weeks, or who may have questions, can call Devine's office at 224-5585.
