Officials from Islip Town and Southwest Airlines came together Thursday at Long Island MacArthur Airport to officially unveil the airport’s new $6 million jet fuel facility.
Built in partnership with Southwest, the new facility allows the airport to have more fuel on hand and brings MacArthur within industry standards, town officials said.
With a total capacity of 300,000 gallons, the new jet fuel facility can hold three times the capacity of the previous facility. In addition, the expanded capacity now allows the airport to have a full week of fuel reserves on hand, which exceeds the industry standard of five days.
“This necessary expansion will pave the way for future growth at MacArthur,” said Rob Myrben, vice president of fuel management for Southwest Airlines.
