Islip Opens Storm Shelter For Pets

Town facility in Brentwood will be available throughout the duration of Sandy.

With Hurricane Sandy approaching, Islip Town is converting its Brentwood Recreation Center to a pet shelter for residents who evacuate their homes but cannot accommodate their pets.

The shelter is open as of 9 a.m. Sunday and will remain open throughout the duration of the storm, town officials said.

“The Town of Islip recognizes that any displacement caused by the storm can leave some families straining to provide care for our pets, who are valuable members of our families,” said Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. “The facility will serve as a safe haven for all pets, large and small.”

The shelter will be administered by the Suffolk County SPCA and will be equipped to deal with the needs of household pets over a long-term basis. Pet owners must bring a crate or carrier to house their pet, proof of rabies vaccination and at least one day’s worth of food. Islip residents must check their pet in and must come back to walk their pet and care for them.
