County Treating Town Salt Marshes for Mosquitoes Tuesday

Parts of several salt marshes in Islip Town will be treated on August 14, say Suffolk health officials.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works’ Division of Vector Control plans to treat parts of the following salt marshes in Islip Town to control mosquito larvae on Tuesday, August 14, by helicopter, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

They include those at the Robert Moses Coast Guard Station, Clam Pond, Gardiner Park, Heckscher State Park and West Oak Recreation.

(See also the table below, as well as the accompanying PDF file for a full list of affected marshes in Suffolk County.)

This was announced by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services on late Monday afternoon.

Should weather conditions prevent completion of the work, the will be continued the next suitable day, according to SCDHS officials in a release about the treatment.

The name of the pesticide being applied is altosid liquid concentrate (methoprene), and it'll be applied via a low-altitude, large-droplet liquid application, the release said.

"The products used by Vector Control are registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and are applied in accordance with the required state and federal permits."

SCDHS officials also said, "No precautions are recommended to prepare for this spraying, as the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift. Human exposure from this operation is unlikely, and the products involved have no significant human toxicity."

You can thank all these POS politicians for the new gun legislation designed to make law abidingRead More citizens give up their second amendment rights out of sheer frustration and incontinence of owning a gun legally for increases in savage on citizen violence. This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Has anyone been able to find out if we are losing money renting this building to this for profitRead More preschool? If I under stood correctly from previous post's, there may be some friendship with one or more BOE members which paved the way for their lease.

I think Proposition 2 is a great idea, in the current structure you have to "call out" anRead More individual basically saying "I think you are doing a particularly bad job". Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
