A Babylon man who works at the Islip Animal Shelter was arrested Thursday after officials say he left a live dog in a dumpster in West Islip earlier this week.

Michael Papini, 30, was caught on surveillance video taking a large plastic garbage bag out of the back of a vehicle and throwing it into a dumpster behind USA gas station, located at 410 Montauk Highway, on Monday morning, according to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Inside that bag was a female 1-year-old Lhasa apso, who was found alive in the dumpster the next morning, the SPCA said.

Papini has been suspended without pay from his job as a kennel attendant at the Islip Animal Shelter in Bay Shore, according to Islip Town spokeswoman Inez Birbiglia.

"The Islip Animal Shelter prides itself on its professional treatment of all pets that come through its doors," Birbiglia said in a statement. "This troubling incident in no way reflects the loving and caring treatment for all animals from our many dedicated staff and volunteers."

Papini is charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty, animal abandonment and other related charges. He is being held overnight at the First Precinct and will be arraigned Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip.

The dog was treated at the Veterinary Medical Center of West Islip and is now at the Islip Animal Shelter.

nanci December 27, 2013 at 11:27 PM
Why did they give the dog BACK to the shelter where this guy worked? Weird!!

The man who found the dog is a very well known Homeless man from West Islip. Hes known as Kevin the Bum and he's a hero. He should get some of the reward. If not you can find him late nights at 7-11 the corner of Higbie and Union. Give him some cash
Ginger Jacobellis December 28, 2013 at 04:36 AM
OMG Kevin is a hero if it were not for him the dog would have been killed in the hooper of the garbage truck! What the hell is wrong with people!?!
Anne Pedicini December 28, 2013 at 08:12 AM
Why did he do it?
West Islip Resident December 28, 2013 at 08:53 AM
Can someone make sure Kevin gets the 2000.00 reward offered by the SCPA since law enforcement cant accept it as civil servant's.

Maybe if everyone called the SPCA ?

I would like to know why the Islip Shelter's employee that committed this crime, is only suspended from his job? He should be fired and never allowed near animals, children or the elderly, again!!! I think he gave himself away, by the box that he placed the dog in, inside the bag. It was probably the type used at the Islip Shelter. And yes, the reward should go to the man who found the dog, homelessness should have no bearing on whether he gets the reward or not. Do the right thing ASPCA!!! Thanks to all contributed to apprehending the monster.

what i want to know is where did he get the dog from and why isnt he fired. it should be like a sex offender u cant go near kids well ppl convicted of animal abuse shouldnt be allowed to work with dogs in any way shape or form. yes i agree kevin should get the reward he has always been a sweet man and deserves it. the animal shelter should do the right thing and fire the man upon conviction

Maybe they ought to give Kevin a job at the shelter!!! Even if its washing the pets . Am sure there's something there that Kevin can do to make a living instead of dumpster saving!!!!

I don't think there are enough facts here to point the finger yet. The shelter he works for is extremely high kill. It is possible (after gathering all the facts) - He let one go free. Perhaps he tried first to put the dogs in the shelter but was reprimanded for trying to do so. Recent volunteers from that shelter couldn't stand mental angish and killing of innocent animals and quit working at that shelter. I just think we need to wait for more information. He doesn't look anything but upset to me. I know first hand the manipulative btch that runs that shelter will do whatever it takes to make things go her way. She actually brags about how many she kills in a day. More questions need answering, was he turned away with these dogs at the shelter? Why was the dog all matted, was it coming from a bad situation, was it going to be put down at the shelter? Not an easy decision for rescuers I would imagine not so easy for a worker that would loose his job if he rubs her the wrong way. Perhaps that is why he is not fired and only suspended? Need the facts first, lets not jump to conclusions.

Wow. Makes some sense

To Smartgirlforhire....Are you kidding me? Not enough facts to point fingers yet? Yes I am sure there is a lot going on that doesn't meet the eye, but I have a feeling you are trying to make others feel sorry for this dog dumper because his boss was a "Btch". You commented how he looks upset...yeah I think he should look ashamed after doing something so disgusting! Why am I getting the feeling you feel sorry for him? Next I think you will say it is ok he left that dog to die in that dumpster and that it was more humane that dieing at the shelter. I am aware of some of the people that work at that shelter, but that is no excuse for doing what he did. Yes, other facts will come out in time, I am sure, and I hope there will be a big investigation, but you are doing our society a disservice by chipping away at the seriousness of what this individual did by dumping this dog and possibly another...and taking away his accountability. No one forced him to do it, so why are you making excuses for him? You did the crime, now do the time. Stand outside a store, put ads online, do something, but don't leave an animal, to starve, suffocate and die a miserable painful death like that...the poor thing must have been scared, and cold. I wonder if someone did that to your pet, how sorry you would feel for them. Whether the dog came from a less than favorable place (you are insinuating) or not, doesn't make what Papini did, any less serious. No matter if his boss was a creep either...You are right in thinking more facts will come out, but don't allow them to make it right for what has been done to a helpless animal...he wasn't helping that animal, he was murdering it.

Does anyone know where the dog came from? @smartgirlfor hire----if your name means you are LQQKING for a job----Good Luck with that....you need to switch your name around to something more fitting! I can't even believe anyone would stand up for someone that does this to a voiceless, innocent creature of God.....You would probably do the same thing if it was a kid!
Ed Horcrantz December 29, 2013 at 12:54 PM
Did Papini ever have any trouble in any other department of the town? was he in trouble before? was he let go only to be rehired by the present administration? Check his work history and who he's related to. You may be surprised who advocated for this monster.
