Pitiful Performance

“Pathetic” was the term used by Giants head coach Tom Coughlin to describe the effort put forth by his offense following their disgraceful performance against the Seattle Seahawks.    And it is hard to disagree with his eloquence.  The Giants rushed for a measly 25 yards, gave up four sacks and countless hits on their quarterback turned the ball over five times and most importantly scored zero points.  What could have turned into a larger blowout was held in check by the Giants defense that played hard and only gave up 23 point, four less than the Seahawk’s average.

Before the start of the season the offense was projected to be a high scoring juggernaut.  But injuries, carelessness with the ball and underachievement led to a horrendous 0 – 6 start.  Even during a four game win streak the offense never produced the numbers expected.  While the defense improved the offense remained stagnant.  Against the Seahawks they looked completely inept.

Yet some players seemed offended by Coach Coughlin’s assessment.  One such player was Hakeem Nicks who took exception to the coach’s description of the offense.   Nick is supposed to be the team’s number one receiver however he more than any other player he has not lived up to expectations.  His dropped passes have mounted.  He seldom gets open.  And he is often hurt and will not play.  Three weeks ago, when the Giants were on a hot streak, he failed to play in a game against the Cowboys, one the Giants needed to stay in the race.

Sunday against Seattle, Nicks caught one pass for five yards.  Four times during the game his quarterback put the ball up in his direction with the kind of trust only reserved for superstars.   Each time, Nicks a big, strong receiver failed to make a legitimate attempt to catch the pass and each was intercepted.

Weather it is the injuries of the last two seasons, or his looking for a new contract Nicks has not given the effort expected of a top receiver.  It is time for the Giants to admit their mistake in drafting him and move on…
