Your Neighbors Thank Their Veterans On Patch

Readers call out those special veterans in their lives as we reflect on the holiday.

As we all spend the waning hours of daylight enjoying the day off, or passing by the closed banks and libraries, we are reminded at every turn that today is Veterans Day. Officially declared a national holiday in 1954, it has its roots in Armistice day, when hostilities ceased, ending World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year, 1919. The day is intended to honor and thank veterans in all branches of the military for their involvement in all of America’s military conflicts.

In honor of Veterans Day we asked you and your neighbors to call out those special veterans they’d like to personally thank by sharing their names on our Facebook pages across the area. Here’s what you contributed:

Lisa Klein-Palladino: My Uncle Billy. US Army. Gave his life at the age of 20 in Vietnam. God Bless

Judith Francis: My husband, Rick, returned from Vietnam to a hostile environment here in the US. He deserved a belated, yet warm, THANK YOU for your service. He served on an aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.

Rusty Borneo Bullet: William Edward Sendell US Army Air Corp.

Tracy Clarry: My brother Daniel Clarry. Two tours in Iraq. He is a lindenhurst graduate.

Margaret DeRosa: Mary C. O'Mallon: U.S. Army Nurse WW2 2nd. Lt. Resident of Lindenhurst 28 years. Rest in peace Mom!!!

Christine Vias Cotrone: My 91 year old neighbor Jack Slootweg who served WWll. Thank you!

Amanda Rash: My Dad who I miss very much every day. Vietnam Veteran William Rash.

Robin Maschi Coello: I just want to say, Thank you to Anthony Guardino of Bay Shore for having served in the Vietnam War and protecting this country we all Love. Thank You Anthony.

John Gennaro: I want to thank Jim Beecher of North Babylon for his service.

Bryan Kelly: My Uncle, Paul Kelly. Vietnam Veteran, retired teacher and active, long time member of the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. Thanks Uncle Paul F. Kelly for your service in the military and your service to the community!

Tiffany Lynn: My dad Phil Tepe, a Vietnam veteran. Current commissioner of the Dix hills fire dept. and active in various veterans affairs. He is not only MY hero but a great role model for my 2 year old son!

Helen MacKay Jacobs: My sons, Jim and Bill, both were in the Navy. Also my niece April still on active duty in the USAF.

Paul Donelan: My father, Northport resident John Donelan. US Navy

Bonnie Newman Bresalier: My Dad is a US Army veteran of the Korean War. He served in Japan and Korea. He always used to joke that he was too young for WWII so Uncle Sam created another war for him. He is still in fighting form and an inspiration to everyone who knows/meets him. Served 2 years in Korea and then 33 1/2 years on NYPD. God bless my Dad!!

Joy Friedman Fallick: A great "thank you" to John Welch, USMC, who is a true hero in every sense of the word, both as a soldier and a civilian.
