West Islip School Budget Voter's Guide

Polls open at 7 a.m. at West Islip High School.

West Islip residents head to the polls Tuesday to vote on the proposed school district budget.

Here is what you need to know:

The West Islip School District Board of Education is proposing a $114.7 million budget, which, if approved, will raise the school tax levy by 3.75 percent. That is within the state's tax cap for the district. If approved by voters, the budget would cost homeowners an additional $288 next year based on a home assessed at $45,000.

Under the budget, the district's two middle schools will shift to an eight-period day from a nine-period day, which gives the school district a cost savings of approximately $600,000 by eliminating a handful of teaching positions.

In addition, the school district will also implement two furlough days in the coming school year, which will provide an additional savings of $544,000.

Polls are open Tuesday at West Islip High School from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

School Board Vice President AnnMarie LaRosa and Trustee Scott Brady are running unopposed for re-election, while Marcelle Crudele and Kevin O'Connor are competing for the seat being vacated by longtime trustee George Smith.

Also on the ballot is Proposition #2, which if passed, would require BOE candidates to run at-large as opposed to vying for specific seats.
