West Islip Library Budget Vote, Trustee Election Tuesday

Residents to vote on a 2.27 percent increase for the $3.6 million proposed 2012-13 library budget.

West Islip residents to head out to West Islip Public Library Tuesday and vote on the proposed 2013-2014 library budget.

Voting will take place at the library from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Residents will see a 2.27 percent increase in their tax levy, should they approve the proposed $3.6 million operating budget. The budget also inlcudes the annual debt service on the Library Improvement Bond used to renovate the library, which raises the total tax appropriation to $4017,612.

The increase falls under the New York state tax cap, said library Director Andrew Hamm.

The increase amounts to approximately $9.18 more per year, or and additional 76 cents per month for the avergae West Islip homeowner.

“In these times every cent is of concern to the taxpayer, but it is our hope that residents will balance that concern with the value they get for themselves and their families from the library, particularly now with the increased access to electronic materials including e-books and other information sources that are available via the library’s online presence," Hamm said in a release.

In addition to being able to cast their ballot on the proposed 2012-13 budget, residents will be able to vote for one trustee up for election for a five-year term.

Incumbent Joan Schumacher is a former president current trustee of the library board, and is running uncontested for re-election.
