Outage Update: 1,700 LIPA Customers Still Without Power in West Islip

Widespread blackouts remain four days after Sandy hit the area.

Update 4:32 p.m.: LIPA currently estimates 1,688 West Islip customers are without power.

Original: Four full days after Hurricane Sandy swept through the area, more than 1,600 West Islip homes and businesses are still without power.

The Long Island Power Authority estimates 1,643 customers in West Islip remain in the dark as of 4 p.m. Friday. That number is up from Thursday's figures, which .

More than 10,000 local customers in area were left powerless immediately following the storm.

A top official with LIPA said Friday it will take at least until next weekend to restore power to most of the communities it serves.

That estimate does not include portions of the area that were ravaged by flooding—particularly homes facing the Great South Bay.

This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.
