District: Beach Street Student Approached By Stranger

A male student was approached by a white-haired man in a white van on his way home from practice, according to district officials.

Suffolk County police are investigating the report of a Beach Street Middle School student who said he was recently approached by a stranger as he walked home from practice.

According to an alert posted on the West Islip School District website, the victim was approached by a white haired man in a white van who asked if he needed a ride home. The student then ran home.

The exact location and date of the incident were not specified.

A similar incident occurred to another Beach Street student in September, who was approached by a middle-aged man near a bus stop at the intersection of Pat drive and Peter Paul Drive. It is not clear if the incidents are related.

A police report has been filed, according to the district.

In the statement posted on the school district's website, Superintendent Richard Simon outlined safety guidelines and encouraged parents to discuss them with their kids.

"While it is certainly inappropriate to foster a sense of insecurity for our children, it is imperative that we provide them with the information and support needed to handle any potentially dangerous situation," Simon stated. "Following and reinforcing the guidelines set forth will help promote a safer community for all."
