O'Connor Wins, Budget Passes

Low voter turnout for annual school budget, BOE vote.

Kevin O'Connor will be the newest member of the West Islip Board of Education as O'Connor defeated Marcelle Crudele by a vote of 1,191 to 1,083.

Also, local voters approved the $114.7 million budget for the 2013-14 school year by a vote of 1,617-1,022. The budget includes a 3.75 tax levy increase.

In addition, Proposition #2, passed by a vote of 1,773 to 706. The measure will change the structure of future board of education votes in West Islip. Future BOE elections will now be at-large races, with the top two or three vote getters, depending on that year's race, winning election.

Incumbent trustees Annmarie LaRosa and Scott Brady both ran unopposed and were re-elected.
