Sagtikos Society Recognized for Historic Painting

Manor was one of 25 recipients of an art conservation treatment.

The Sagtikos Manor Historical Society was recently awarded a conservation grant treatment from the Greater Hudson Heritage Network for their 1796 watercolor painting of "The Burning of Charleston."  The treatment will be done paper conservator, Jonathon Derow of J.D. Conservation, Inc., the Manor announced. 

The painting, which was done by 12-year-old David Gardiner, depicts the 1775 battle near Bunker Hill in Massachusetts. The painter was the great-grandfather of Robert David Lion Gardiner, of Sagtikos Manor. The paper used for the painting was said to be manufactured by Whatman, an English company of the finest quality. 

The painting was also recognized by Leigh Keno of "Antiques Roadshow," who said it indicates an excellent example of American folk art.

The SMHS was one of 24 recipients of the award, which is handed out to improve objects of art that can be used for public exhibition, education and interpretive progrmas.
