Rare Solar Eclipse Visible This Weekend

Early birds on Long Island will get a rare look at a rare type of solar eclipse this weekend.

The "hybrid eclipse" is set to begin at 6:29 a.m. in the greater New York City area as the sun is rising, according to Earth Sky. The partial eclipse will end by 7:11 a.m.

Seeing a solar eclipse in New York is rare as it is, and Sunday will bring an especially unique type of eclipse. Sunday's is considered a "hybrid" eclipse because it will first appear as a "ring eclipse" over the Atlantic Ocean before turning into a "total eclipse" as it reaches Europe and Africa. Long Island's view will be of a "partial eclipse." Fewer than five percent of eclipses in the past 15 years have been hybrids.

As mesmerizing as it may be, don't look directly at the eclipse unless you have proper eye protection, or you could risk severe eye injury and even blindness.
