Helping Hands in West Islip Hosting Food, Clothing Drive for Sandy Victims

Residents can drop off donations by 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 14.

Helping Hands in West Islip is holding a clothing and Thanksgiving drive for local families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The collection will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at American Legion Post 1738. All donations should be dropped off by 9:30 a.m.

Many families in West Islip have lost their homes and belongings due to flooding during the powerful storm, and many more with tight budgets were forced to throw away refrigerators full of food after it spoiled when the power went out.

Jennifer Gallozzi, who runs Helping Hands, was personally contacted by several local families in need.

"I have put together a list of what our neighbors are asking for. Some is very specific, in that it is for families that contacted me in desperate need of clothes to replace all that was lost to the floods."

For a list of specific items and sizes that are needed, click here.

Gallozzi also said that fleeces, sweaters and sweatshirts in any size are in great demand due to the dropping temperatures. Cards and small treats such as candy or cookies are also encouraged, as a small gesture to brighten someone's day.

To help those suffering have a happy Thanksgiving, Gallozzi is collecting canned food donations and turkey vouchers or coupons (no actual turkeys), as well as supermarket gift cards.

Baked goods and centerpieces are also welcome.

You can thank all these POS politicians for the new gun legislation designed to make law abidingRead More citizens give up their second amendment rights out of sheer frustration and incontinence of owning a gun legally for increases in savage on citizen violence. This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Has anyone been able to find out if we are losing money renting this building to this for profitRead More preschool? If I under stood correctly from previous post's, there may be some friendship with one or more BOE members which paved the way for their lease.

I think Proposition 2 is a great idea, in the current structure you have to "call out" anRead More individual basically saying "I think you are doing a particularly bad job". Politics get dirty enough as is and I think this will increase participation and ultimately give us a better Board of Education.

Why didn't the author run for the open seat this year? Bark of a wolf and courage of a lamb.
