Brookfield Building Proposal on Oct. 29 Zoning Board Agenda

The building project features less setback than current zoning rules, and one resident is already concerned.

A proposal to build a building at the southwest corner of Montauk Highway and Brookfield Place in West Islip will be heard by the Town of Islip Zoning Board on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

According to the meeting agenda, Samara Realty Corp. is asking approval to extend a business use into a more restrictive zone and build a building leaving arterial highway setback of 10 feet instead of required 25 feet.

The proposal was initially on the Oct. 1 agenda and adjourned. Public hearings, held at Town Hall, begin at 7:30 p.m.

The proposal already has at least one West Islip resident concerned.

In a posting on Patch's board, a Patch reader urges local residents to attend the hearing citing the fact the building will be located so close to the highway and present a traffic safety hazard.

"This would allow the owners to erect a building whose footprint would sit approximately 10 feet from the curb line along Montauk Highway. If you are as concerned as I having a building located that close to a major road and obstructing the corner view west from Brookfield Place I would suggest you make an appearance and be heard," the reader posted.
