Girls lacrosse team squeaks by William Floyd 9-8 Friday, will face West Babylon on Monday.
When the West Islip girls’ lacrosse team took a 6-2 lead to the half on Friday, it appeared the Lions had their first round playoff game against William Floyd under control. But despite strong play by Floyd’s netminder Chelsey Sidaras (13 saves) and some sloppy second half play by the Lions, West Islip was able to walk away with a tight 9-8 win on Friday. Next up, the No. 6 Lions will travel to face No. 3 West Babylon Monday at 4 p.m. “In the first half we came out shooting but their goalie made saves,” said Joe Nicolosi, West Islip’s head coach. “In the second half we got a little sloppy in the middle of the field. I’m just glad time ran out.” West Islip started strong in the first half and less than a minute into the game Lorraine …

Softball volunteer retiring after 19 years.
On May 17 West Islip High School’s Girls Varsity Softball team celebrated Senior Day with a 10-0 victory over Central Islip. The girls finished regular season play with a 13-7 record, and will continue their season next week during payoffs. Senior Day was especially bittersweet this year as the team said goodbye to Bob Tobey after 19 years of dedicated volunteer service to the Varsity Softball program. Bob and his wife, Karen, are retiring to Alabama and will be greatly missed here in West Islip. Former softball coaches Mr. Le Vien and Mr. Gagliardi were on hand to wish Bob well and thank him for his years of service. West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.
Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque. It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns. Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

For the third time in the past four years, West Islip Boys Track and Field has gone undefeated and captured the League III Title. It was a hard fought battle in their last meet of the season against Bay Shore Wednesday afternoon. West Islip needed to win two of the last three relay events to defeat Bay Shore. The 4x800 relay team of Vincent Melia, Mike Nowotarski, Dan Morley and Chris Nohilly won their event setting up a show-down in the 4x400 relay (Sean Sepe, Brad Hitter, Dom Morgan and Colin O'Connor). West Islip trailed Bay Shore after the first two legs of the relay before Dom Morgan received the baton. Morgan closed the gap and when he handed the baton to Colin O'Connor for the final leg it was a virtual dead heat. O'Connor …
