This was the Kaczanowski's family deli circa 1900's on the cor. of Hawley Ave & Higbie La. - the…Read More only food store in West Islip until the early 1940's. Too bad it was demolished it may have been old but "old" memories still linger on. It was a store that gave credit to anyone who needed it - trust was never a question. No plastic card - just a name in a "composition book" & no demands for interest or payback due dates! It was also a place to meet a friend & catch up on the latest local news...my memories are from the early 40's when the only way you got the news was at the movie theatre (the closest was in Babylon Vill.) or over the one radio in your home! Today West Islip is no where near the West Islip I was born to - I'm all for progress & it's made this town a much better place; however, I'm sadden to see such places as the La Grange Inn, as it stands now, giving a poor image of how the entrance to our town should look. Every town has some place of historic value even if only to the immediate residents & that value should be preserved in memory of those who established it. I'm glad to have the memories of certain places & happenings that have happened in my time - especially reminicing with friends via "one to one" not texting etc. (don't get me wrong, I may be of the older generation - I love texting too). I just hope that the younger generation of today will have something to pass on to their children other than that little thing we call a smartphone that connects us to the whole world but seems to be disconnecting us more & more from making memories.
