Lauren Ginocchio, a 7-year-old from West Islip, competed in the 2012 Miss Jr. Pre-Teen New York pageant this past weekend. During the competition, contestants in four divisions took part in three scetions of competition: modeling casual wear, formal wear and personal interviews with the judges. Ginnocchio was selected for the pageant through an application and interview process of girls throughout the New York area.

Knitting Club Head to the West Islip Library Monday at 7 p.m. to join the Knitting Club. The group is open and always seeking new members to share tips and tricks of the trade. Members should bring their own needles, pattern and yarn. Humane Education If you're thinking about getting a pet, or simply want to learn how to better care for the one you already have, the library is hosting a two-hour program on how to properly care for and monitor the well-being of animals. Owen Johnson's Seagrass Protection Act Passes State Senate

The new Seagrass Protection Act will allow regulation of seagrass management areas.

The New York state Senate has passed legislation to protect marine habitat and the continued viability of commercial and recreational fishing. The bill was sent to the Assembly, and has been returned with changes to the Senate for final approval. The bill - sponsored by Senator Owen Johnson (R-C, Babylon) -  establishes the Seagrass Protection Act to address threats to seagrasses, an ecologically important species. The bill grants the NYS Deparment of Environmental Conservation authority to: The Great South Bay is home to a type of seagrass called eelgrass, an important component of a healthy estuary system. Turri, Duke Eye Another Title

Former WI LAX star and Blue Devils teammates move on in NCAA lacrosse tournament.

The Turri family will be spending Memorial Day weekend in Massachusetts. Following Duke University’s convincing 17-6 win over Colgate on Sunday in Philadelphia, Justin Turri and his Blue Devils teammates are moving on to the national semi-final of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. They face Atlantic Coast Conference rival Maryland on Saturday at Gillette Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN 2. A redshirt senior, Turri continued his strong play in the tournament. Against the Raiders on Sunday, the West Islip High School graduate had a goal and dished out three assists as Duke turned an early competitive game into a rout. West Islip has two more national champions within its midst. Lauren Spagnoletta, Katie Rotan and the rest of the C.W. Post women’s lacrosse team on Saturday celebrated a 17-16 win over West Chester. The win gives the Pioneers its first Division II national title since 2007 and its third overall. In Saturday’s game, Spagnoletta had three goals and Rotan chipped in with one goal. Throughout the playoffs, Spagnoletta — a senior — has been a key offensive force for C.W. Post with 12 goals and an assist. She was named to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament team.  Rotan, a sophomore, was also a presence on offense with two goals in the Pioneers championship run. Suffolk Notebook: IDA Hopes Incentives Will Keep Broadridge

Pols hope the cost savings will keep the company from taking its 1,600 jobs off Island.

Hoping to prevent the loss of 1,600 jobs on Long Island, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday floated an incentive package worth millions to Broadridge Financial — a public company that has threatened to move off-Island if officials didn’t find a way to help it trim costs. If the financial services company takes the offer — which its board will decide on in June — then it'll come as a disappointment to officials in New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Ohio and Texas who were trying to woo the $2.2 billion company into moving to their states.
