Toy Drive, Ornament Class, Police Forum on Tap in West Islip

There is also a free blood pressure screening this week.

With the countdown to Christmas officially kicked off there’s plenty happening in West Islip this week and Patch wants to make sure you don’t miss any of the fun or great programs taking place.

Here’s what’s ahead:

Annual Toy Drive Wednesday

The Helping Hands organization will hold its 23rd annual holiday toy drive on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at the West Islip Fire House at 309 Union Boulevard. Residents can drop off an unwrapped toy (no used games or puzzles please) from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and volunteers are welcome to stay and wrap toys as they are dropped off. Last year the group collected 5,000 gifts. Good gift suggestions include children’s books tied together and lunch boxes or decorated lunch bags filled with assorted goodies, and cute bags of small bath and personal items and inexpensive jewelry are perfect for older youth who are often overlooked.  Slippers and socks are desperately needed and Costco movie tickets for Tanger would make it possible  for some children to experience their first holiday matinee.  If you are not sure of a toy’s condition please do not bring it, we are not able to check for missing parts.

Ornament Creation Workshop

If you’re looking for a new homemade ornament to add to the tree this year stop in at the West Islip Library on Thursday, Dec. 5 as there is a holiday snowflake ornament workshop running between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. There is a $10 materials fee and it’s a good idea to call ahead to ensure there is still available seating.

Free Blood Pressure Screening

On Wednesday Dec. 4 the West Islip Library will hold a free blood pressure check event from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. This community service is brought to you through the auspices of Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter’s office and the Our Lady of Consolation Residence nursing staff.

Police Community Forum

The Suffolk County Police Third Precinct will hold its monthly community forum on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at the precinct at 1630 Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore.
