Spirit Week Kicks Off, BOE Meeting & Lots of Library Programs

Programs for teens and adults happening this week.

The leaves are slowly falling, homecoming festivities get into full swing this week and beach time is clearly coming to an end. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything fun and informative going on. Here is a look at programs and events happening in West Islip this week:

Monday, Sept. 23

Banned Books Week

September 22 – September 28
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Stop by the West Islip library and check out its display of banned books

Library Displays

The West Islip Library’s displays this month include Near and Far by John DeGuardi - an exhibit of landscape paintings in various mediums influenced by experiences in Europe and the United States in the Gallery Hall. Peter Tejera displays his photographs of still lifes in the Darline L. Carter Room.

Homecoming Spirit Week

Monday kicks off Spirit Week at the West Islip High School and culminates in the homecoming game and festivities next Saturday, at 2 p.m. when the Lions take on Smithtown East at home.


Tuesday, Sept. 24

Magic of Spices

7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Evelyn Banker is a master chef, food writer and cooking teacher. Her specialty is the use of spices, herbs and grains in quick, easy, fresh and delicious meals that anyone can prepare.

She will make sprout salad, soup and tea, explain how every dish is made and describe the nutritional value of all the ingredients she uses - with a special emphasis on the remarkable qualities of turmeric. She will also display and discuss her book, which will be available for purchase

Project Connect

3:30 – 4:30 PM

Teens with special needs are invited to participate in Project Connect! During each session participants will experience a variety of social activities (video gaming, art, cooking, etc). If you are interested in learning more about this program or if you are a teen who would like to volunteer to help out please see librarian Mrs. Fowler.

Haunted House Preparation Meetings

(Future meetings are October 4, 11, 18)

4:00 – 5:00 PM

Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to help create a SPOOK-TACULAR Haunted House for children to explore! Join us at our meetings where we will write a script, build sets and create costumes – all for the big SCARY performance – which will take place on Saturday, October 26.  Community service credit will be rewarded to all participants!

 

Fleiss – Giacummo – McAvoy NY Contemporary Art Symposium 2013

The Islip Art Museum will be showcasing the first ever FGM Contemporary Art Symposium at the Islip Art Museum in East Islip, NY. The symposium will be sponsoring 12+ international artists to come to Long Island and create and collaborate together. This program is inspired by D. Fleiss & East West Artists International (DFEWA), whose mission is to establish a working cooperation that will encourage and improve the cultural exchange between outstanding artists of varying backgrounds from eastern and western countries. The artist’s work will be displayed at the Islip Art Museum from September 27th through October 7th, 2013.
