West Islip residents need to hold on a few more days – the heat is finally going to be turned down a notch.

The heat wave that has pushed thermometers to their ends as highs soared into the mid-90's is expected to finally break over the weekend, bringing with it temperatures some 10 degrees lower.

Saturday will mark the last full day of the high heat, with high's pushing 90 degrees for the sixth straight day over the island. The heat, however, will not linger too long.

An approaching cold front will dramatically shift temperatures downward, bringing with it heavy and potentially severe thunderstorms as the pressure-cooker finally gets booted out to sea. Behind the cold front, highs are expected to struggle to even get to 80 degrees.

The thunderstorms on Saturday evening are expected to bring a significant amount of rain, along with the potential for high winds and lightning as the unstable air masses combat each other overhead.

Forecasted highs for Sunday and Monday are 81 degrees and 80 degrees, respectively. Nighttime temperatures will also see relief, with lows dropping into the mid-60s after 9 p.m.
