Unique Scout Fundraiser Benefits More Than Gold Award Project

Workshop event features letter writing to soldiers and history lessons for students of all ages.

West Islip High School Senior and Girl Scout Brooke DiPalma is aiming to earn her Gold Award by renovating and refurbishing the Weeks-Muncy Cemetery.

So like with most scout projects, she's holding a fundraiser to get monies for materials.
But this isn't just a car wash or bake sale effort. She is putting a very unique twist on her fundraiser effort to benefit troops abroad as well as local young students who love history.

The event, called "Let's Remember" will be held this Saturday, Nov. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at West Islip High School's cafeteria.

Students from kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to attend and
participate in two unique workshops:  one focused on writing letters to soldiers abroad, and a second which focuses on West Islip History and the historic cemetery.

All participants will be separated into groups based off of their ages and accompanied by High School Volunteers from station to station, according to

In order to raise funds to refurbish the Muncy-Weeks Cemetery, a local West Islip historic site, there is a requested $5 donation and those attending are asked to wear red, white, or blue.

“Together we can remember, together we can make a change," said DiPalma in her flyer about the event.
