WIHS Alumni Sports Report: Turri Gets First Win at Duke

Weekly column highlights athletic accomplishments of former WIHS students.

LACROSSE

  • Maritime sophomore Mike Johnson got in the box score on Saturday with an assist in the Privateers' 12-4 loss to Vassar.  
  • Syracuse sophomore goalie Alyssa Costantino recorded six saves in the first half of a 23-12 victory over No. 13 Boston College.  
  • Freshman Kyle Turri made five saves in the eigth-ranked Duke Blue Devils' 16-7 win over Jacksonville. On Friday, he made seven stops to record his first collegiate win over No. 17 Penn.  Meanwhile, senior Justin Turri added two goals for the Devils on Saturday. 
  • Fairfield freshman Drew Federico had two goals in a thrilling 9-8 victory over Bryant.

  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's David Kastner won the 2012 state championship in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.43. 
  • UConn junior Joe Clarke placed third in the mile (4:02.95) to help his team capture their seventh consecutive New England Championship. 

Baseball

  • C.W. Post senior Matt Simone posted two hits in the Pioneers' 3-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan.  

Swimming & Diving

  • Cortland sophomore Sarah Culmo will be attending Nationals at the Swimming and Diving meet in Indianapolis next month with her 200 Freestyle Relay team, along with individual events (50, 100 and 200 Freestyle).  Sarah set three individual school records in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle and was part of four relay teams that set school records in the 200, 400 and 800 free relays and the 200 medley relay. She was also named to the 2012 Women's Swimming & Diving All Conference First Team.
