WI LAX Stars Move On In NCAA Division I Tourney

Turri, McCormack help lead their teams to big wins.

The Men’s NCAA Lacrosse playoffs got started this past weekend and several West Islip lacrosse stars helped lead their teams to victory and a spot in the next round of their respective tournaments.

In perhaps the most exciting game of the weekend, Duke topped defending champion Loyola (MD) 12-11 Sunday in double overtime. Kyle Turri got the win and had 13 saves including one in the first overtime. He also had 3 groundballs for the Blue Devils. The win puts Duke into the national quarterfinals where they will play Notre Dame Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Yale is also moving on in the tournament following the Bulldogs 10-7 win over Penn St. on Saturday.

Senior defenseman Michael McCormack had a monster game with 8 groundballs and 3 caused turnovers. He also assisted on Kirby Zdrill’s goal with 9:06 remaining in the fourth that put Yale ahead 7-6, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Bulldogs will now play top-seeded Syracuse on Saturday at 3 p.m.

In Denver’s 19-14 win over Albany, freshman Tom Moore saw limited action. The Pioneers move on to face North Carolina Sunday at 12 p.m.

Andrew Hodgson
had 3 goals Sunday for Towson but it was not enough as Ohio St. topped the Tigers 16-6. On the season, the junior from West Islip finished with 27 goals and 14 assists.
