WI College LAX Report: Kelly Gets Top Rookie Honors

Patch will provide weekly reports on how former local lacrosse players are doing at the collegiate level.

The college lacrosse season is in full swing and some former West Islip High School stars are once again having an impact. Throughout the spring season, Patch will provide weekly updates on local players. If we’ve missed someone, e-mail Greg Sleter (gregory.sleter@patch.com) and we’ll add your favorite player to our weekly watch list.

• Brown freshman Jack Kelly was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week as he led the Bears to an 11-9 victory over Harvard on Saturday. The goaltender made 5 of his season high 15 saves in the fourth quarter keeping Harvard off the scoreboard and helping Brown rally from a two-goal deficit. The Bears (4-1) have won its last four games with Kelly starting each. His 7.27 goals against average lead the Ivy League and ranks in the Top 10 nationally.

• It was a big week for Duke’s sophomore goaltender Kyle Turri. The West Islip High School grad got the start in two games this week, winning both. This past Wednesday, Turri made 8 saves in an 11-8 win over North Carolina. On Saturday, he made 15 saves in a 12-4 victory over Towson. One of the goals he allowed was to former teammate, junior midfielder Andrew Hodgson.

• Yale senior Michael McCormack had 1 goal, 5 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers in the Bulldogs’ 12-10 loss to Cornell.

• Quinnipiac’s Michael Sagl had 1 goal and 1 assist in the Bobcats’ 11-10 loss to Hartford. On Tuesday, March 12, Sagl had 3 goals and 2 assists in Quinnipiac’s 13-12 loss to Providence.

Anthony DeLuca had 2 goals and Scott Mattera had 2 ground balls and 1 caused turnover for LIU Post in the Pioneers 9-8 win over Southern New Hampshire University this past Wednesday. On Saturday, LIU Post defeated Roberts Wesleyan 7-5. In the game, Mattera had 2 ground balls and 1 caused turnover.

Bryan Badolato had 5 goals and 2 assists in Marquette’s 14-11 win over Mercer this past Tuesday. In the game, goaltender JJ Sagl made 7 saves, defenseman Jerry Nobile had 1 goal and 5 groundballs and Liam Byrnes had 1 assist and grabbed 6 groundballs. On Saturday, Sagl made 9 saves as the Golden Eagles lost to St. Joseph’s 12-7. In the game, Smith had 1 goal and Byrnes had 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.

• Saturday was a big day for two West Islip natives on the Adelphi women’s lacrosse team. Devan Crimi had 3 goals and 6 assists and Sara Sangiorgio had 5 goals in the Panthers 20-7 win over Merrimack. Crimi’s 9 points was her career high.

Katie Rotan had a solid week for LIU Post’s women’s lacrosse team. This past Wednesday she had 2 goals in the Pioneers’ 23-13 win over New Haven. On Saturday, Rotan had 2 goals and 1 assist in the team’s 22-6 win over Holy Family.

Casey Sarle had 2 goals and 1 assists for Oneonta in the Red Dragons’ 15-14 win over Farmingdale State. She also had 4 groundballs, 1 caused turnover and 12 draw controls.

Deanna Monfredo had 3 goals and 3 assists for Curry College in the Colonels 23-1 win over Becker this past Tuesday. On Thursday, Monfredo had 1 assist in Curry College’s 12-2 win over Fitchburg State.

You can thank all these POS politicians for the new gun legislation designed to make law abidingRead More citizens give up their second amendment rights out of sheer frustration and incontinence of owning a gun legally for increases in savage on citizen violence. This is only the beginning and in short time many New Yorker's will be forced to remain in their homes fearing one of these animals will make them their pray. I for one believe in the old adage, it's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
