West Islip Well-Represented in NCAA Men's LAX Tournies

Several former WI High School lacrosse stars playing this weekend with an eye toward a national title.

The 16-team field for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Tournament is set and West Islip is once again represented on four of the teams that will be seeking a national championship.

Sophomore Kyle Turri will be in goal for No. 7 Duke as the Blue Devils take on defending champion Loyola, Md., Sunday at 5:15 p.m. On the season, Turri appeared in 16 games and has a 10-1 record with a 9.05 goals against average and .503 save percentage.

At Towson University, the Tigers will face No. 3 Ohio St. Sunday at 3 p.m. Andrew Hodgson, a junior, is the Tigers’ second leading scorer with 24 goals and 14 assists. He started all 17 games for Towson.

Defenseman Michael McCormack is completing is career at Yale with a trip to the NCAA Tournament when the Bulldogs meet No. 8 Penn State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. During his senior season, McCormack has 52 groundballs and 20 caused turnovers during 15 games. He also chipped in with 2 goals and 3 assists.

Also on the Yale roster is freshman Jonathan Reese, who played in two games during the regular season for the Bulldogs.

Out west, No. 4 Denver will meet Albany Saturday at 7:30 p.m. On the Pioneers roster is freshman Tom Moore, who during limited playing time over 11 games during the regular season had 2 goals and 3 assists.  

Division II

The eight-team NCAA Division II tournament was also set over the weekend and LIU Post with several former West Islip lacrosse players will be participating. On the Pioneers roster is Scott Mattera, Anthony DeLuca, Patrick Burke and Jon Napoli. LIU Post will host Le Moyne on Saturday.
