West Islip Little League Captures Three Gold Medals in Williamsport Tournament

Three out of five teams brought home championship gold this summer.

With the West Islip Little League baseball season finished and in the record books, it's time to look back and take stock of an extremely successful summer of baseball action.

In the end, West Islip brought home an impressive three championships in the Williamsport Tournament, in addition to a great deal of hometown pride.

West Islip League President, Jim Alcus, expressed much satisfaction in regards to his league's performance this past summer.

"I think it was a great season," he said. "This year we had a team in the 9, 10, 11 and 12 year-old boys teams, every single one of them playing for the gold in the final elimination game among 19 different towns, which is a feat in itself."

The 9- year-olds won their division, overcoming significant opposition in the process to secure first place.

"Out of 19 towns, our 9- year-old boys, coached by Kevin Daily, won the gold," Alcus said. "Out of 26 teams, they came in first place."

Also playing in the gold medal bracket were the 10 -year-old boys coached by Phil Guercio, Bryan O'Neill, Zenny Tsouporakos, and John Isolano. West Islip lost to Deer Park, 4-3.

It was gut check time for the 11 year-olds, who managed to pull out a win for their division after the prize remained elusive after many years.

"For second time since I've been involved- and I've been involved since 1993- our 11 -year-old boys won first place," Alcus said. "They beat 16 different towns while representing District 34 in Williamsport."

The 12 -year-old boys team defeated Half Hallow Hills in the final to capture the gold for West Islip as well.

The West Islip Minor Gold girls softball team also had an outstanding tournament season, and played for the gold medal in the District 34 tournament. This team finished with a 17-3 record and were coached by George Emiholz, Annmarie Monteverde and Tom Adams. West Islip lost to Deer Park for the final round in a tight game, 9-7.

"The minor team was just incredible," Alcus said. "They made it to the last game in the Williamsport [Tournament], and again they made it to the last game in the District 34 finals. The coach did a phenomenal job with these 13 girls."

Alcus also showed great appreciation for all who have made this past Little League season such a great success.

"I'd like to thank the West Islip boys for doing a great job in their divisions," he said. "Each division vice president did a phenomenal job in picking their coaches and managers, and I think we had a great 2010 season."
