West Islip's Patrick Carter earned a place at the state championships, having won the Suffolk Diving Invitational in mid-December.
According to Newsday, the eighth-grader beat out Sachem East diving star Anthony Stefanelli in the event.
In his second varsity year, the young diver is quickly making a name for himself, displaying excellence in and out of the water.
“Whenever he comes up, he wants to know what he did wrong and what he can do to get better. The last dive is never good enough for him, he’s always got to do one more," West Islip swimming coach Bob Kollar told the paper.
Kollar said Carter also maintains a 90-plus grade average.
The coach added that he has "great expectations" for the diver, and considers him a serious contender for the state championship.
