West Islip Crushes Port Washington 10-0 In Williamsport Little League Tournament Opener

Fast-paced game gives the West Islip 11-year-old team a decisive victory

Sagamore Field in East Williston was host to West Islip's first win in the Williamsport Little League tournament. West Islip shut out Port Washington on Wednesday in an impressive 10-0 victory.

West Islip's Kevin Dicipna hit a home run in the first inning with one man on, giving his team an early 2-0 lead. By the end of the first inning, they were up 4-0; clearly, West Islip had brought their A-game.

At one point early in the second inning, a West Islip player took a pitch to the knee and was unable to continue (a replacement runner took his place at first base), resulting in a minor argument between members of the two competing team's coaching staff.

As the game progressed, it became readily apparent that Port Washington was having a great deal of difficulty dealing with West Islip. By the end of the third inning, Islip had extended their lead to 6-0, and by the fourth it was 7-0.

"This was an all-around team win," said West Islip's manager Mike Montiglio . "They all did a great job. There was some good pitching out there and some great hitting...they did fantastic."

The end came in the fifth inning when Louis Antos nailed a home run with two men already on base, putting West Islip's score to 10-0 and securing the win via the league's mercy rule, which comes into play when one team has an insurmountable lead over the other.

Rick Delmonte, father of Port Washington's catcher, Ryan, expressed his disappointment in the game's outcome, while remaining supportive of his son and his team.

"They just had an off day, "he said.  "There's really no other reason.  They're better than this."

Joe Vizzini, West Islip's assistant coach, was also pleased with his team's impressive win.

"I think they prepared well, and it showed," he said. "We needed to keep our pitch count down, because we run a tight rotation, and that was exactly what we needed them to do. Scoring the 10 runs helped, as it really shortens the game for us, pitching-wise."

Regarding Louis Antos' game-wining home run, Vizzini didn't seem that surprised. As he put it, Antos "usually supplies the power on the team."
