Quiet Day for West Islip at County Finals

Four wrestlers get eliminated in early rounds.

Four West Islip wrestlers made it to the Division I Suffolk County championships Sunday at Stony Brook University, but they all lost early on.

Tyler Walsh dropped his opening 112-pound bout to Sayville’s Matt Lehsinger via pin in 3:54, then lost his wrestle back meet in a lower bracket to Sachem’s Conor O’Hara, 13-7.

Steve Coppola (135) and Pat Ryan (171) both made first round exits, while Brendan Smith (189) didn’t make it out of the piggy back early round.

-Huntington’s Nigel McNeil, wrestling at 119 pounds, has not lost in two years and advanced to the semifinals with easy wins Sunday afternoon.

-Hauppauge’s Chris Mauriello, wrestling at 96 pounds, will wrestle in the semis Monday. He is the younger brother of Nick, who was recently in the news for his battle with MRSA.

-Longwood leads all teams with six wrestlers in the semis, while John Glenn has five.
