"Always the topic of controversy, high school lacrosse is about as ferocious as it gets with regard to debate, but West Islip lived up to its billing as the nation's best team that can't buy lottery tickets," Inside Lacrosse writers said in the magazine's December issue.  "The Lions rebounded from an early surprise loss (to Sachem North) to beat and fist pump their way past 21 straight opponents to sit along atop the final Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse High School Power Rankings."

In addition, , a member of the high school's 2010 graduating glass and now freshman at the University of North Carolina, received the Individual Game Performance of the Year award.

Accounting for all individual performances—high school, college and professional— Galasso received the honor for his performance in the state title game. In the game, he totaled seven points—one goal and six assists— that made him Long Island's all-time leading scorer with 500 points and four state titles in five years.

Now, Galasso is a big-time freshman to watch at UNC.  As Tommy Kehoe, of IL.com put it: "I haven't been this exited about an 18-year-old since the Olsen twins became dateable."

And in a bit of irony, West Islip also received some attention for the only game the team lost during the 2010 season. The Lions defeat at the hands of Sachem North tied for third in the category of Upset of the Year. The other four finalists included three college games and one game from this past summer's World Cup held in Great Britain.
