Lions Head To Postseason Undefeated

West Islip tops Smithtown East 39-14 and gains top seed in Division II playoffs.

West Islip capped its strongest football season in recent memory with a commanding 39-14 win over Smithtown East Saturday at the high school.

With the win the Lions (8-0) head to the postseason as the top seed in Division II and will face No. 8 West Babylon 2 p.m. Saturday at the high school.

Coming into Saturday’s game against the Bulls, the Lions were in pursuit of regular season perfection and while Smithtown East was competitive in the first quarter, the Lions would not be denied.

With the game tied at 7 in the second quarter, West Islip revved up its high-powered offense behind its stout offensive line and the running of quarterback Sam Ilario. The junior signal caller scored touchdowns of 12 yards, 5 yards and 18 yards in the second quarter alone to give the Lions a 26-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, West Islip extended its lead on touchdowns by Ilario, his fifth of the game, and a 50-yard pass from AJ Ilchert to sophomore Max McNicholas.
