Girls Soccer Cruises in 4-1 Victory Over Centereach

Big first half, suffocating defense spark West Islip's win.

A four-goal first half combined with suffocating defense sparked a 4-1 West Islip victory over Centereach Tuesday afternoon.

It was right around the ten minute mark in the first when Chelsea Weir got West Islip (2-0) on the board with a goal off a free kick.

The second goal came when Kelsey Raschke delivered a long pass to Amanda Martinez, who drove on a breakaway and put one past the Centereach keeper.  The Lions would add two more quick scores to end the half up 4-0.

“We subbed a lot, our goal was to keep getting the new players experience,” Greico said. “Keep fresh bodies in the game and hope nobody gets hurt.”

Kelsey Olhbaum started in net for the Lions, but split time with the other three goal keepers.  They'll all be given an opportunity to replace star keeper Samantha Whitney, who was lost to graduation.

“Each goal keeper got ten minutes each,” Greico said. “We wanted to give all of them a chance out there today.”

During the second half, the Cougars were able to find more scoring opportunities than they had in the first.  The Cougars scored their first and only goal of the game off a rebound from a corner kick. The ball was stopped by the WI keeper, then kicked in by Centereach.

“These non-league games are preparing us for the season, and the season for the playoffs,” Greico said.

Next up for West Islip is Smithtown West. The Lions defeated West twice in overtime last season.

“We’re looking forward to playing them,” Greico said. “It’s our first away game. They have eight starters returning, and it’s a really tough matchup.”
