Former West Islip Athletes Bring Home Championships

West Islip's Turri and St John the Baptist's Galati enjoy collegiate seasons

Athletes from both of West Islip's high schools, St. John the Baptist and West Islip, brought home a championship this past May.

West Islip's own Justin Turri, midfielder for the Duke Lacrosse team, helped the Blue Devils capture their first NCAA lacrosse championship on May 31. Turri's goal with 8:44 left tied the game for the last time in regulation. It only took five seconds of overtime play for the Blue Devils to win a national championship 6-5 over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Turri's teammate, C.J. Costabile, won the faceoff, sprinted down the center of the field, and scored for Duke.

In front of 37,126 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Turri and the Blue Devils battled a field temperature that at one point hit 120 degrees. Turri ended the 2010 season with 20 goals and 17 assists.
