Aponte Named Under Armour All-American

WIHS senior selected to team that includes nine fellow Long Island high school lacrosse stars.

Nick Aponte’s lacrosse playing days at West Islip High School may have come to an end, but the senior will play one more game representing his hometown.

A three-year varsity player for the Lions, Aponte was named to the Under Armour All-American team. He will play on the north squad Saturday, July 6, at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas stadium. The 8 p.m. game will be carried live on ESPNU.

The Penn St.-bound Aponte is one of 10 Long Islanders on the 22-man roster, which will face a team of All-Americans from the south.

Aponte will join a Nittany Lions program that has been revitalized in recent years by head coach Jeff Tambroni. Penn St. finished the 2013 season 12-4 and lost in the opening round of the NCAA tournament to Yale 10-7.

Under Armour All-Americans are selected by a panel of lacrosse experts from Inside Lacrosse Magazine. The year-long selection process includes input from college and high school coaches from across the country as well as nominations from the public.
