Alumni Report: Turri Adds Another Title

Weekly column highlights athletic accomplishments of West Islip graduates.

Justin Turri’s trophy case has a little less room today.

The Duke senior and West Islip High School graduate celebrated an ACC Tournament victory on Sunday as the Blue Devils downed rival North Carolina 12-9 in Charlottesville, Va.

Turri scored his 13th goal of the season at the 4:37 mark of the third quarter to give Duke a 6-4 lead.

Over the past several years, the former West Islip lacrosse star has been apart of several championship teams including Duke’s 2010 National Championship and two New York State titles as a member of the Lions.

Fellow West Islip native Nicky Galasso of North Carolina saw limited action in the game and had two shots for the Tar Heels. 

Baseball

Mike Lospinuso pitched the final four innings and got the win for Western New England University in the Golden Bears 7-0 victory over Roger Williams in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Saturday. He allowed eight hits and had five strikeouts. Lospinuso is now 4-1 on the season.

Lacrosse

Lauren Spagnoletta had a goal and two assists and Katie Rotan had two goals for C.W. Post as the Pioneers defeated Stonehill 15-13 on Saturday.

• Sophomore Alyssa Costantino had four first half saves for Syracuse as the Orange defeated Louisville 16-9 on Friday.

Michael Sagl had a goal and three assists for Quinnipiac but the Bobcats lost to Robert Morris 25-9 on Saturday.

Sara Sangiorgio had three goals and an assist and Devan Crimi had two goals and an assist for Adelphi as the Panthers defeated Bentley 20-11 on Saturday.

• Hartwick’s Jackie Moynihan had a goal in the Hawks 12-8 loss to Nazareth on Saturday. On Sunday, she had a goal and an assist in Hartwick’s 19-5 loss to St. John Fisher.

Peter Gonzalez scored a career high 10 points (2G, 8A) for SUNY Cobleskill in the Fighting Tigers 25-1 win over Penn State Abington on Wednesday.

Track & Field

At Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invite this past weekend, Joe Clark of the University of Connecticut competed in the elite 1500m and completed the race with a time of 3:49.82.

Lindsay Aponte, a sophomore at Sacred Heart University, this past weekend competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University and threw 44-feet 8-inches in the shot put, placing her seventh in a highly competitive field. She also set a new personal record in the discus with a throw of 131-feet 5-inches.
