West Islip Schools Issues Halloween Safety Tips

Campuses will be locked down after hours on Halloween.

The West Islip School District will be closing down school campuses on Thursday, Oct. 31 in light of the Halloween holiday and is reminding parents that elementary and middle schools will be locked down at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the high school.

“This practice have proven to be effective and will be implemented again this year,” states a letter from School Superintendent Dr. Bernadette Burns sent to parents on Oct. 15.

The letter also offers up a slew of safety tips and Halloween safety advice, including feeding children before trick or treating so that there’s a better chance of all candy getting inspected before being eaten, and knowing the route children will be taking while going door to door.

Other tips include explaining the difference between harmless fun and vandalism acts, and reinforcing safety measures such as not entering homes or getting into cars with strangers.

The letter can be found on the district’s website.
