West Islip School District Enrollment Dips a Bit

District launches new security efforts and is investigating more options.

Enrollment in the West Islip School District is down by 168 students this school year, from last year's figure of 5,009 to the current enrollment of 4,841, according to data provided by the district in the minutes of a September board meeting.

The total middle school enrollment is in the high 500s and there are 1,650 students in the high school this year.

Class sizes for this year are the following:

  • Kindergarten: 18-22
  • First and Third Grade: 20-24
  • Fourth and Fifth Grade: 24-27

On the school security front, the district has locked down the doors to the high school and visitors must use a buzzer and intercom system to gain entrance. Thre is also a new camera at the front entrance as well as a full-time security person.

The district is considering more security measures that will be made possible by a $25,000 grant attained by Sen. Phil Boyle's office. The district's security committee is investigating what to spend those funds on.
