Voter's Guide: West Islip School Budget, Board Election

What you need to know for Tuesday's budget vote and school board election.

West Islip School District residents will vote on the district’s $115.3 million proposed budget for the 2014-15 school year on Tuesday.

The proposal calls for a 0.5 percent increase in spending over the current year and carries a 1.64 percent tax levy increase, which is within the state's tax cap.

School officials say the fiscal plan maintains the district’s current academic program, while achieving cost savings through the retirement of 20 teachers, most of whose positions will not be replaced due to the continuing decline in student enrollment at all grade levels.

Three candidates are running for two seats on the West Islip Board of Education. Incumbents Ronald Maginniss and Robert W. Ulrich, as well as challenger Donald J. Marmo. The two highest vote getters will be elected.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at West Islip High School. You can read the district's budget newsletter here
