Simon To Retire; Burns To Become School Superintendent

Change in school district leadership will take place October 1.

Richard Simon, who has served as West Islip School Superintendent for the past three years, will retire as of October 1.

The board of education accepted Simon’s retirement letter at its meeting Wednesday night at West Islip High School. Bernadette Burns, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, will be the school district’s next superintendent as of October 1.

Simon came to West Islip in 2010 from the Cold Spring Harbor School District, replacing Dr. Beth Blau. He led the school district through some challenging fiscal times that saw the closure of two elementary schools and also have to manage district finances under New York State’s new tax cap.
