With Hurricane Sandy forecast to hit Long Island on Monday, West Islip School District students will have at least one day off.
In a phone call to parents across the district, superintendent Rick Simon said schools would be closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday. A decision on whether to open on Tuesday or not will be made on Monday, Simon said in his phone message.
Earlier Sunday, Islip Town issued mandatory evacuations for Category I Storm Surge Zones, which are concentrated mainly in low-lying areas south of Montauk Highway. Bayview Elementary School falls within this zone.
The West Islip Public Library will also be closed on Monday due to the storm, according to a bulletin posted on their website.
